Tips / Strategies

As an educator, we can assure you that before any risky play is played, our job as an Educator is to make sure the area is free of any hazards and potentially dangerous material, such as glass, broken twigs.

A visual check is always made before proceeding to risky play, such as wet or slippery structures.

Children are to proceed to risky play, if proper gear is worn, such as proper shoes for the weather and proper clothing.

The children are always under the Educators supervision.

If we can see a potential risk in the play, we won’t allow it.

According to Sandseter (2011, as cited in Dietze and Kashin, 2019) states “Risk is not necessarily a danger that needs to be avoided, but rather something that needs to be managed” (p.133).

As stated by British Columbia Injury Research and Prevention Unit (2015, as cited in Dietze and Kashin, 2019), “Children need to practice risky play in order to learn to manage risk in their lives and practice helps them to learn to navigate risk to avoid injury” (p.135).

Tip to parents, is to participate alongside children, let them know, if they are confident they can do it, if they want to try than they can try if not, then maybe some other day when they are feeling up to it.
